This translation task,GIVE:A Cognitive Linguistic Study,is a book that introduces the basic theory of cognitive linguistics.John Newman, the author of the book, combines phenomena in daily life with linguistic theory, and introduces to readers the principles of Cognitive Linguistic theory embodied in the word "GIVE" with plain and intelligible language. Therefore, scholars who have researched linguistics, and ordinary readers and students who are interested in relevant knowledge can get enlightenment from this work.In doing this translation practice, the translator has encountered many translation problems caused by cognitive differences, such as how to translate personal pronouns and polysemous words, and how to tackle with the differences in thinking patterns between target language readers and the author. The translator applies the relevant theory of Cognitive Translatology to guide the translation.Specifically, she analyses the language phenomena of the source text from the perspectives of cognitive construal, concept, category and thinking mode, and solves the problems in the translation from these perspectives. At the same time,as the source text is an informative text that aims to convey the information related to cognitive linguistics, the translator, therefore, not only faithfully convey the original information to the target readers, but also consider the readers’cognitive methods and thinking modes to ensure the effectiveness of the translation.Through this translation practice, the translator realizes that the informative text has such characteristics as preciseness and objectivity. Therefore, the translator should also ensure the translation remains objective and faithful, and its language style stays serious and formal. The translator also hopes that this translation can provide reference to the target readers who are interested in cognitive linguistics theory, and help them better digest relevant knowledge.
