The translator finished this report based on the translation practice of GIVE: A Cognitive Linguistic Study written by John Newman, who is a famous linguist from Canada. This book is divided into five chapters, respectively from general remarks on GIVE verbs, the meaning of GIVE,constructions with literal GIVE and figurative GIVE,and prospects for future research. This translation practice report aims to apply Newmark’s communicative translation theory and take part of the contents of GIVE: A Cognitive Linguistic Study as examples to study the Chinese translation methods of academic texts.According to Newmark’s text typology theory, texts can be divided into three types: informative texts, expressive texts and vocative texts.Informative texts are characterized by strong logic and lots of information. The original text falls in the category of informative texts. When translating the text, the translator tried to accurately convey the information and focuses on the expression habits of the target readers to ensure the effectiveness of the translation.Based on the communicative translation theory, the translator mainly discussed the difficulties in the translation and how she deals with them. The translator was challenged with the translation of technical terms, abstract nouns, long and difficult sentences, sentences containing passive voice, and cohesive devices.Different methods are adopted to handle these difficulties. At lexical level, the translator adopts the use of equivalents, conversion of part of speech and so on.At syntactic level, the translator uses the methods of division, amplification, inversion, omission and so on.At discourse level, reappearing the pronoun, omitting cohesive devices, retaining cohesive devices are mainly adopted to deal with the translation of cohesive devices. This translation practice makes the translator realize that the translation of informative text must be faithful and accurate, and the translator hopes that this report may provide reference value for the translation of informative texts.
