| In 1985,Halliday first put forward the concept of “grammatical metaphor” in his Introduction to Functional Grammar, pointing out that metaphor occurs not only at the lexical level, but also at the grammatical level, and the metaphor occurring at the grammatical level is grammatical metaphor. This thesis attempts to analyze the metaphorical phenomena in Howard Goldblatt’s English translation of Honggaoliang Jiazu from the perspective of metaphor of transitivity and of the main means of implementation, that is nominalization. The metaphor of transitivity mainly involves the transformation of several process types: material process, mental process, relational process and existential process. The metaphor of nominalization mainly discusses three conditions of Chinese-English translation: regarding processes as things, attributes as things and conditions as things.Mo Yan,the winner of Nobel Prize in Literature, enjoys a great reputation both at home and abroad.Honggaoliang Jiazu is one of Mo Yan’s representative works. The main translator of his works is Howard Goldblatt,an American Sinologist.Currently,he is the most prominent translator of Chinese literature in the western world and has translated more than ten of Mo Yan’s works to English readers.Goldblatt not only maximally approximates the original text in terms of diction and rhetoric, but also accurately conveys the content and style of the original text in terms of the meaning of words and sentences,so as to give the readers of target language a fresh and refreshing feeling.Based on Goldblatt’s English version of Honggaoliang Jiazu, this thesis hopes to be able to use the theory of ideational grammatical metaphor, combined with relevant translation examples from the perspective of ideational grammatical metaphor to summarize some feasible translation skills in the process of translation of Chinese-English,in order to provide some guidance for the translation of literary works in the future. This thesis is divided into five chapters: the first chapter is the introduction, which briefly introduces the purpose, background and significance of the research of Goldblatt’s English version of Honggaoliang Jiazu. The second chapter is literature review of this thesis, which mainly summarizes the research status, level and development trend of Mo Yan’s Honggaoliang Jiazu and Goldblatt’s English version Red Sorghum,as well as the translation research related to the theory of metaphors. The third chapter is the theoretical framework of this thesis, which is introduced mainly from two aspects of ideational grammatical metaphor. The fourth chapter is the main part of the thesis, which analyzes and discusses the translation skills of metaphors from Chinese to English, combining with the specific examples in Howard Goldblatt’s English version of Honggaoliang Jiazu under the guidance of ideational grammatical metaphor. The fifth chapter is the conclusion and suggestion,in the hope of providing some help to translators in the field of translation, promoting the export of Chinese culture and better spreading Chinese culture. |
