Howard Goldblatt’s Dynamic Adaptation And Selection To Translational Eco-environment

Howard Goldblatt is a worldwide famous American translator and sinologist.In the past three decades,he has translated over fifty Chinese novels and collections,which made a great contribution to the dissemination of Chinese literature and culture.At present,current studies mainly focus on the quality of his translation works,but few of them pay special attention to the development of translator himself.Therefore,a research on Howard Goldblatt is quite necessary.On the basis of Darwinian principle of “adaptation and selection”,Hu Gengshen originally put forward an approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection.Judging the competence of translators and their works in a macro and dynamic translational eco-environment,this theory provides a new ecological approach to translation studies.This thesis aims to explore Goldblatt’s dynamic adaptation and selection to the translational eco-environment through an analysis on the English version of Red Sorghum and Frog.This thesis starts with a literature review on Goldblatt and his works.In the second chapter,it mainly introduces the core idea of Hu’s theory.Chapter three makes a comprehensive analysis on Goldblatt’s dynamic adaptation and selection to translational eco-environment.This study suggests that the two above English versions with different translational eco-environment are apparently different in linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions.It comes to the conclusion that both Goldblatt’s positive adaptation and his adaptive selections contribute to his great success.Meanwhile,the going-out of Chinese literature can’t be achieved overnight.Moreover,this study not only points out the lag of translator’s dynamic selection at religious level,but also questions the “equal-dialogic relationship” within the translation community.These will surely conductive to the further enrichment of approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection.
