Bei Xin magazine is the first magazine founded by Bei Xin Book Company. It was published in Shanghai on August 21,1926,and was finished publication on December1,1930 after the fourth volume. The orientation of Bei Xin magazine as a literary periodical at the very beginning determined that Bei Xin magazine presented a critical and tolerant attitude. As a comprehensive magazine, compared with professional periodicals of literature,Bei Xin magazine’s biggest characteristic was its tolerance to all kinds of literary schools, opinions and authors.Bei Xin magazine lasted four years and published 124 issues in total.Among all the magazines issued by Bei Xin Book Company, the number of Bei Xin issues published is second only to Yu Si weekly(260issues in total).According to the stages of the editorial team,Bei Xin magazine can be roughly divided into three periods and it presented different characteristics in the period of different editors.Bei Xin focused on the publication of prose and had a strong literary nature in Sun Fuxi’s editorial period.By the time of Pan Zinian,Bei Xin magazine began to publish contents related to current affairs and politics, and Bei Xin magazine began to move towards integration. However, during the editing period of Shi Min,Bei Xin magazine tried to achieve a balance between comprehensiveness and literariness. But in fact, this balance could only be ideal, and Bei Xin magazine as a whole still presents a strong literary nature. From its form,Bei Xin magazine is a comprehensive journal, but when you really enter the magazine, you will find that comprehensiveness is just its appearance, and literariness is its intrinsic essence.During the editorship of Sun Fuxi,Bei Xin magazine,as a window to introduce and promote the achievements of folk literature, played a role in promoting and developing the achievements of the "May 4th" ballad movement.During the period of the "revolutionary literature" controversy,Bei Xin magazine was another battlefield besides the journal Yu Si.Many literature youth such as Han Shiheng,Gan Ren,Yu Dafu and Bing Chan standing in the perspective of Lu Xun,published in the Bei Xin magazine to support Lu Xun’s comments. The most outstanding literature characteristic of Bei Xin magazine is that the promotion of literary works of Lu Xun,Zhou Zuoren,Yu Dafu,Xu Qinwen,Su Xuelin,Chen Xuezhao,Li Jieren,Fei Ming,Bai Wei,Yang Sao,Peng Jiahuang,Sun Xizhen,Hu Feng,Hu Yunyi,i.e.Xu Qinwen,Yu Dafu and Su Xuelin are the representatives of this thesis.Xu Qinwen was a writer recommended by Bei Xin magazine in the early period. As a representative writer who grew up under the influence of Lu Xun,his works published in Bei Xin magazine during this period were full of local characteristics, and revealed the social status quo of the White Terror period.Yu Dafu was recommended by Bei Xin magazine after its revision, and most of his later representative works, such as Fan Sheep,The Leap of Paper Money,Bayberry Soju and other novels, were published in Bei Xin magazine. When arguing with Lu Xun and Liang Shiqiu,he translated Sinclair’s Gold Worship Art as support.Yu Dafu’s works published in Bei Xin magazine reflected his attitude towards literature and society in this period, and reflect his ideological change.Su Xuelin is the representative of female writers in Bei Xin magazine. Her early representative works Green Sky and Prickly Heart were first published in Bei Xin magazine.Subsequently published by the Bei Xin Book Company. These two books had a great influence on the literary world at that time, and established Su Xuelin’s important position in the first decade of new literature.Su Xuelin,Bing Xin,Feng Yuanjun,Ling Shuhua and Ding Ling were named as the five women of new literature. The survival of Bei Xin magazine for four years is of great significance in the development of modern Chinese literature.First of all,Bei Xin magazine attached great importance to the beauty of art both in content and situation. The binding design of Bei Xin magazine was quite exquisite. The lines and patterns inside the magazine had been carefully designed, and the layout was exquisite and meticulous.Bei Xin magazine set an example to improve the publishing technology, which had a great impact on the publishing industry at that time.In terms of content, the artistic characteristics of various periods represented by the rich illustrations in Lu Xun’s translation of The Tide of Modern Art History could not only give readers an intuitive aesthetic feeling, but also allow Chinese readers to simply understand the development history of European art, which had a subtle influence on readers’ reading aesthetics. At the same time,in the process of maintaining long-term interaction with readers,Bei Xin published many articles introducing domestic and foreign situations, which broadened young people’s horizon, promoted young people’s understanding of the social situation, created a strong academic atmosphere for young people, and guided them out of difficulties. In general,Bei Xin magazine was the "companion" of young people, and it was of far-reaching significance to guide and encourage young people at that time.
