| With the deepening of International Sinology Research, more and more scholars begin to pay attention to James Legge and his translation of The SHE KING,but there are few studies on cross-cultural interpretation. From the perspective of cross-cultural communication, this study takes James Legge’s The SHE KING which translated in 1871 as the research object, compares James Legge’s translation with the Shijing in Chinese classics, focuses on the names of musical instruments in the Shijing, and analyzes the similarities and differences of ritual and music cultural interpretation,cross-cultural interpretation and the reasons for the similarities and differences in James Legge’s The SHE KING,It also puts forward some enlightenment to the cross-cultural communication of Chinese traditional Confucian classics. The main body of the thesis consists of six chapters:The first chapter is the introduction. The introduction analyzes the background and research status of the thesis, and expounds the origin and purpose of the topic.Today, when vigorously advocating the "going out" of Chinese culture, promoting the culture of Chinese traditional classics is an important task to promote cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.Legge’s translation is a typical example of cross-cultural communication of the book of songs.Based on this, the introduction points out the research ideas and methods of this thesis. The second chapter is the musical instrument and ritual music culture in the Shijing. This chapter is the ontological study of the Shijing.Firstly,it determines the types of musical instruments in the Shijing, and determines that there are 24 kinds of musical instruments studied in this thesis. Then it combs out the distribution of musical instruments in the Shijing from the three parts of "wind, elegance and ode".Chapter three is the translation of musical instrument names in Legge’s translation. This chapter is an ontological study of James Legge’s The SHE KING,including an overview of James Legge’s translation and the translation of musical instrument names in the translation. This thesis mainly summarizes the translation from three aspects:translation background, translation style and translation characteristics, lists the translation of 24 kinds of musical instruments in Legge’s translation, and briefly summarizes the characteristics of the translation of the names of these musical instruments.Chapter four is the interpretation of musical instrument culture in Legge’s translation. This chapter compares and analyzes the interpretation of musical instrument culture in James Legge’s translation and the original the Shijing from three aspects: sacrifice culture, marriage culture and banquet culture. The fifth chapter is the similarities, differences and enlightenment of James Legge’s cross-cultural interpretation. This chapter selects the four musical instruments "Qin,Se" and "bell and drum" which appear more frequently, deeply analyzes the similarities and differences in the interpretation of ritual and music culture and the reasons for the similarities and differences, and puts forward some suggestions on the cross-cultural communication of Chinese classics.Chapter six is the conclusion. The conclusion summarizes the full text.James Legge’s The SHE KING has played a great role in the history of Sinology communication, but there are still some deficiencies in the cross-cultural interpretation of the cultural connotation of Chinese rites and music.Starting from the musical instrument culture, this study analyzes the similarities and differences and reasons of James Legge’s crosscultural interpretation, and provides suggestions for the cross-cultural communication of Chinese classics. |
