Don’t You Ever:My Mother and Her Secret Son is a biography written by Mary Carter Bishop,a journalist of Philadelphia Inquirer,for her mother and brother.This biography,narrating the life experiences of Mary’s mother and brother,reveals the theme of stratification in Central Virginia in the 20^thcentury.The translator selects the third part,called“Our World”,as the source text for the translation practice.After analyzing the source text,the translator chooses Context Theory of London School as the guiding theory to solve the problems in the translation process,so as to clarify the feasibility of Context Theory in biography translation.With the help of linguistic context,the translator clarifies the references of deictic words and presents the associative meanings of relevant words,thus ensuring the accuracy of the target text.Based on situational context,the translator chooses literary expressions and reappearing the rhetorical effects,enhancing the literariness of the target text.Considering the differences of cultural contexts between the original readers and the target readers,the translator adopts the technique of addition and annotation to translate the culture-loaded terms,achieving the goal of comprehensibility.It is hoped that this translation task can provide some references for biography translation in the future,and promote the application of Context Theory in biography translation studies.
