| It was generally believed that the fortune and official position of a father should be passed onto the son of his wife rather than the son of his concubine.That was practiced from the very beginning and it would shock the public if we didn’t abide by this tradition.This kind of story-deprival of the inheritance right of the son born from legitimate wife for the son born from a concubiane could be seen a lot in the book Historical Records as well as the documents prior to it.It could be found by contrast that the book to some extent rewrote what had been recorded in previous documents,which would be called retelling in this paper.Based on current researches from the academic community,this paper compared the deprival of the inheritance right of the son born from wife in some retrospective documents,including the Story of Eastern Zhou Dynasty,the Feudal Prince Wei Kangshu,the Feudal Prince Jin,the Feudal Prince Chu,and the Feudal Prince Zhao.This paper also analyzed the different expression about deprival phenomenon in those documents and Historical Records,and finally discovered the reason and significance of Sima Qian’s retelling efforts.The whole paper consists of introduction and five chapters.The introduction explains the reason,significance and value of the study,lists out its evolution process,and expounds how to approach this study and what’s needed to be solved.Chapter 1 studies the retelling about deprival of the inheritance right of the son born from legitimate wife for the son born from a concubine in Historical Records: the Story of Eastern Zhou Dynasty.Was Baosi,the favorite concubine of emperor in Youzhou,really laughing,was it the beacon fire or drum that confused feudal princes,whether the state of Shen took the initiative to or was passively forced to attack the Zhou Dynasty,those details would be firstly compared among retrospective literatures.Then it analyzes how Wang Zidai,through the Upheaval of Wang Zidai,made his back to the Zhou Dynasty,and what role it played in the development of the Jin Dynasty.Finally comes to the conclusion that the retelling of these two events is of great significance to indicate the mastermind behind the unrest,narrative logic and narrative strategy.Chapter 2 studies deprival of the inheritance right of the son born from legitimate wife for the son born from a concubine retold in Historical Records: the Feudal Prince Wei Kangshu.Firstly,it analyzes that confronting with the Zhouxu rebellion,how Historical Records: the Feudal Prince Wei Kangshu recorded the life choice for Dai Gui,the mother of the prince named Wan,how Shi Que put forward his suggestion,and the dialogue between Yin Gong and Zhong Zhong.Then it studies how Historical Records: the Feudal Prince Wei Kangshu described the reason for sending Prince Chen to the Qi dynasty and Zishou’s actions when "feudal prince Xuan marrying a woman from the Qi dynasty".Finally comes to the conclusion that retold text has gone far in ideological attitude and artistic techniques.Chapter 3 studies the Upheaval of Liji retold in Historical Records: the Feudal Prince Jin.This paper discusses details about the manipulator plotted abolishment of prince,the prince’s running away and Shen Sheng’s tribute to the court.Finally comes to the conclusion that the retold texts in Historical Records have great influence in revealing mastermind and artistic techniques behind the "Liji rebellion".That is how Sima Qian form his own way in story narration.Chapter 4 studies the same story in Historical Records: the Feudal Prince Chu and Historical Records: the Feudal Prince Zhao.Firstly,it analyzes how Historical Records: the Feudal Prince Chu described the role of Prince Jian’s mother,the events related to Fei Wuji and Wu Zixu’s actions after his arrival in the state of Wu.Then it analyzes how Historical Records: the Feudal Prince Zhao described Wu wa’s life story as well as the on-the-spot report and creation about the empress Zhao Daoxiang.Finally comes to the conclusion that the retold text in Historical Records is needed for narrative arrangement and position indication.Chapter 5 discusses the reasons and significance of Historical Records’ retelling about deprival of the inheritance right of the son born from wife for the son born from a concubine.Based on the literature atmosphere at that time,his own creative framework,and the special style of Historical Records,Sima Qian has had a far-reaching significance in history revision,integration of historical materials,narrative techniques,character portraying and other aspects through his efforts in retelling,it also has a profound influence on later literature. |
