Xu Bin was a Jinshi in the thirteenth year of Yongle.His native place was Ningyang,Shandong Province.He was not only a major official of the Pavilion,but also a poet of the Cabinet-style literature in the early Ming Dynasty.Xu Bin’s family originated from the Xu family in Gaoyang.Due to war or official affairs,his family migrated several times from Lingbao,Dangshan County,Henan Province to Ningyang,Shandong Province.Xu Bin’s ancestors were either officials or civilians,all of good virtue.Influenced by the family culture and Lu culture,Xu Bin was an honest and upright official and made great achievements.During his life,he served mainly in Beijing.His travelers were concentrated in the court officials,including Yang Rong,Yang Pu and other important officials,most of whom were literary leaders.Xu Bin’s works include four volumes of Mr.Dong Lu’s poems and twenty volumes of Mr.Dong Lu’s collection,but they were destroyed in the wars,and it is impossible to see the whole picture.The only ten volumes of the Vatican Library are likely to be abridged,but not available.Through consulting other collections,books,local Chronicles and databases,we have obtained a total of 37 poems,46 articles by Xu Bin.These works have various types and rich themes,which is the research basis of this article.As a key official of the pavilion,Xu Bin had always upheld the Confucian concept of ethics,worship holy and Ming Dao,and cultivate virtue.The thought of Confucianism also deeply permeates its literary concept.Xu Bin attaches great importance to the relationship between literature and social politics,and his works are based on Confucianism.He especially emphasized that poetry should be compatible with the "Correctitude of Disposition" and present the appearance of warmth and peace.In addition,Xu Bin also noticed the importance of cultivating qi.He adheres to the concept of "Xue Bo Qi Chong",advocates writers to study and pay attention to the improvement of personality cultivation,which is the continuation and practice of Cabinet-style literature.Xu Bin’s poetry is rich in ideological content,including conversation poems,travel notes,painting,birthday,mourning poems,current politics,among which "the eight poems" are the source of the eight scenes of Ningyang culture.His poems inherited the theme of ode to the holy,and formed a peaceful and elegant poetic style.However,Xu Bin did’t stuck in the wind of Cabinet-style.With the change of current politics and his own situation,he created poems reflecting current affairs and writing true feelings,generous and fresh styles coexist.Xu Bin’s prose is rich in types,including preface,inscription,epitaph,etc.His prose also involves architecture,poetry,genealogy,epitaph and other aspects.His prose style is varied,changing freely,and he takes Confucianism as its main content.At the same time,he also emphasized the expression of his thoughts and emotions,lyric and reasoning coexistence.In terms of art,his prose language is simple and has a strong rational color.In a word,through the systematic study of Xu Bin’s life,thoughts,poetry and prose,we can show his real life picture,creative situation and personality,so as to realize his reasonable positioning in the history of literature,and promote the objective evaluation and in-depth and meticulous grasp of the Cabinet-style literature.
