Harold Pinter is a pivotal figure in the history of British theatre, and the third playwright in the history of theatre to win the Nobel Prize for Literature,a position he holds in high esteem.Pinter’s early experiences and his witnessing the sufferings of the Jews undoubtedly had a lingering influence on his works. The studies of Pinter and his works have been long-standing both in China and abroad, covering a range of topics from biographical researches to comparative studies.Scholars have paid much attention to Pinter’s representation of the Jews in his works. This thesis, from the perspective of space theory, intends to study the physical, social and psychological spaces of the Jews.Focusing on Pinter’s works like The Dumb Waiter,The Birthday Party and Ashes to Ashes, this thesis tries to reveal how Pinter depicts the living plights of the Jews in the concentration camps, hiding places, and post-Holocaust dwellings. The study concludes that Pinter uncovers the pains and sufferings of the ordinary people through the Jews.More than that,he writes with a compassionate heart about his understanding and sympathy. With a fearless conscience,he endeavors to awaken those who have forgotten the sad history of war and torture. He hopes his works can warn the world of the evil in human hearts so that tragedies such as the Holocaust will not be repeated.
