Chinese admire jade,and jade culture has a long history in China,The ancient Chinese regarded jade as the crystal of the essence of heaven and earth.They believed that jade,a tangible material,could symbolize the invisible spirit,which reflects the morality,wisdom and emotion of the Chinese nation.Jade culture has had a great impact on the spiritual will,morality and ethics and behavior of the Chinese nation for thousands of years.The prosperous Tang Dynasty was also an era of advocating jade.With liberal politics,prosperous economy and rich material foundation,the Tang Dynasty is an open society,where ordinary men of letters can wear different kinds of jade according to their preferences,which are reflected in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.Jade,in the works of poets in Tang Dynasty,not only means a natural stone,but a symbol of noble sentiment and lofty quality,and often was compared to gentleman.The literati in the Tang Dynasty were deeply influenced by Confucianism,so they especially worshiped the character of a gentleman."Would rather be a jade broken than a tile intact."(better to die in glory than live in dishonor),was the highest spiritual pursuit of the literati in the Tang Dynasty.There are a large number of character “玉”which means jade in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.As a poetic image,jade plays a unique role in expressing emotions and feelings.These jade images have rich spiritual connotation,ranging from the poets’ pursuit of the meaning of life and the anxiety about the safety of the world,to the ups and downs of individual destiny and the sadness for parting or death.The study of the jade image in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty is of positive significance to enrich the research of the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.The main content of this paper can be broadly divided into three chapters:The first chapter is a specific investigation of the image of "jade" in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.This chapter includes three sections:the first section determine the research scope and object of imagery of jade in the poetry of prosperous Tang Dynasty.The second section is the quantitative statistics of the image of "jade" in the poems of famous poets in the prosperous Tang Dynasty,including the number of jade images and the number of different appellation of jade;The third section is the basic classification of jade image in the works of representative poets in prosperous Tang Dynasty.This chapter emphasizes that the jade images in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty are not only large in number,but also rich in form and connotation,involving all aspects of social life,which proves the richness and diversity of the images in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.The second chapter is the analysis of the spiritual connotation of the image of "jade" in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.It consists of three sections:the first section discusses the pursuit of life in the jade image in the poetry.The poets of the prosperous Tang Dynasty were born in the prosperous age.They had a broad mind,high aspiration,high-spirited and upward spiritual pursuit that their predecessors rarely had,and especially the pursuit of the value of life,which is also prominent in the jade image of the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.The second section discusses the love for the motherland and home in the jade image in the poetry.The experiences,such as studying or working outside,garrisoning the frontiers and fighting for the motherland,inspired the strong feelings of family and country among the poets of the prosperous Tang Dynasty,which is the most outstanding spiritual connotation.The third section discusses the expression of the poet’s personality represented by the jade image in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.The prosperous Tang Dynasty is an era full of creativity and the liberation of personality.Poets displayed their personality,showed their talent and created great poetry,which demonstrated the unprecedented new look of the age.Expressing personality is one of spiritual connotations of image of jade in poetry of prosperous Tang Dynasty.The third chapter explores the composition and function of jade image in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.In terms of the composition of the content and expressive function,the jade image in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty also shows the poets’ broad knowledge and profound cultural.This chapter is divided into tow section: the first section analyzed the composition of jade imagery.The prosperous Tang Dynasty was a society in which various concepts such as Confucianism,Taoism,Buddhism and chivalry were compatible and parallel,and the whole society was thriving.Poets in the prosperous age had a broad vision,pursuit of progress and pioneering spirit.However,the An Shi rebellion brought a heavy blow to the Tang Dynasty.The thoughts and emotions of the poets impacted by the rebellion infiltrated into the jade image,which was expressed by a variety of elements in the thoughts of Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism.The second section discusses the three functions of the jade image in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty: one is to express emotion by historical allusions,the other is to communicate views by myths and legends,and the third is to voice aspiration by legends and stories.Conclusion: the jade image in the poetry of the prosperous Tang Dynasty has various forms,rich connotation and unique function.They broaden the material of poetry in the prosperous Tang Dynasty,enrich the ideological content,greatly enhance the expressiveness of poetry,and add bright colors to the innovation of poetry images in the prosperous Tang Dynasty.
