A Practice Report On Nanchang 2020 Government Work Report Under Conceptual Metaphor Translation

The original text of the translation practice report is selected from the Nanchang Municipal Government Work Report in 2020.This material objectively and comprehensively expounds the achievements and difficulties of the Nanchang Municipal Government’s economic and social development in 2020 and the work plan for 2021.With the improvement of China’s comprehensive national strength,the pace of Chinese cultural exchanges with foreign countries has been accelerating.Urban exchange is a very important part of Chinese cultural exchange.In recent years,Nanchang has continuously expanded the depth of its foreign exchanges and held many large-scale international events,showing the good image of Nanchang City to the world.The government work report is a window for the international community to understand the city,and it is also one of the links of the city’s foreign cultural exchanges.There are many conceptual metaphors in the government work report,which carry rich and professional economic and political information,which is the main difficulty in translation.Only by correctly handling the translation of the conceptual metaphors in the political work report can we successfully achieve the purpose of communication and better publicize and introduce the development of the city to the outside world,to successfully realize cultural exchanges.At present,domestic scholars have not paid enough attention to the translation of conceptual metaphors in political texts.Therefore,there is a need for translation studies of conceptual metaphors in political texts.This is also the responsibility and mission that a translator in the new era should shoulder in foreign cultural exchanges and dissemination.Based on the conceptual metaphor theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson,this report categorizes ontological metaphors,structural metaphors,and spatial positioning metaphors that appear in the material.These conceptual metaphors are subdivided into six subcategories:entity metaphor,personification metaphor,container metaphor,labor metaphor,color metaphor,and war metaphor.These conceptual metaphors are specifically analyzed in case studies.Given the diverse types of metaphors in the text,which are difficult to understand and express,the report must consider the transmission of information and emotions in the original text,reproduce its rhetorical effect,and carefully consider the cultural differences between China and foreign countries.After a detailed analysis of the cases in the text,translation methods such as literal translation and free translation,as well as translation techniques such as extension and transformation are used to deal with metaphors.Through the above methods to accurately convey the meaning of the original text,ensure that the translation is fluent and fluent,in line with the language habits of the target language readers,and achieve the purpose of the translation.Through practice,there are several findings: First,conceptual metaphors in political texts are difficult points in the translation,because these conceptual metaphors often carry rich historical and cultural knowledge,are typical culturally loaded words,and can handle these conceptual metaphors well It is related to the quality of the translation;secondly,the cognition and translation of conceptual metaphors are influenced by Chinese and English cultural backgrounds,cognitive patterns and thinking patterns.The Chinese and English worlds have a common understanding of container metaphors and anthropomorphic metaphors in conceptual metaphors,so literal translation methods can be adopted in translation;Metaphorically speaking,there are quite different cognitive models in the Chinese and British worlds.There is a big difference in the mapping mode from the source language to the target language.At this time,the translation method of free translation or conversion metaphor should be selected.Third,certain principles must be adopted for the translation of conceptual metaphors;Fourth,although political texts are informational texts,there are some sentences in political texts that belong to emotional or even appealing categories,especially some sentences that contain profound historical and cultural information.When dealing with these conceptual metaphors,even if these conceptual metaphors do not meet the conditions of foregrounding,to smoothly introduce the city image and promote foreign cultural exchanges,the metaphor should be retained in translation and the metaphor should be annotated.This translation practice report also has some shortcomings.Objectively,there is not much research on conceptual metaphor translation in domestic academic circles,especially the metaphorical translation of government documents,which leads to the lack of mature and systematic translation theories to guide the translation process;subjectively,government work reports are formal documents,the translation is difficult,and the translator needs to have extensive cultural accumulation and a high translation level.Due to the limited knowledge and insufficient level of the author,the research results may not be satisfactory.It is believed that if more scholars join the research in this field,there will be more research results in this field,and the theory of metaphor translation will be more mature and systematic.
