Government work report serves as a window on China’s social and political situations and policies, so its translation study is of vital significance. Based upon the author’s personal practice of C-E translation of 2014 Nanchang Government Work Report, feasible strategies for translatiing political essays are explored herein from the perspective of the Skopos Theory. A brief review of the theory, covering its main ideas and current researches home and abroad, is given as a prelude to the present study, followed by an analysis of the lingual features and possible translation problems of the political essay in terms of its lexicon, syntax and textual rhetoric. Addressing the linguistic characteristics of the political text in the above-mentioned aspects, some practical translation strategies, including adapted rendering, paraphrasing, literal translation plus annotation, amplification and conversion, derived from the Skopos, Coherence and Fidelity rules of the Skopos Theory, are proposed and demonstrated through the examples taken from the author’s translation practice.
