Mental health has always been a major concern for society. The development of psychological education for children in China is still at a relatively low level.Overseas researches on children’s mental health are relatively mature and there is much experience for us to learn. However, domestic scholars have paid little attention to the translation and researches of outstanding foreign psychological works. As a result, researches in the field of children’s mental health in China has long lagged behind. So the translator chose to translate one of the works of the famous American psychologist William Reich,The Child of the Future, for translation practice. The translator mainly analyzes it based on the translation shift theory from two perspectives: level shift and category shift. In terms of level shifts, this report investigates the translation of tense and singular-plural.Through the shift from the grammatical level to the lexical level, the effect expressed in English through grammar could be reproduced in Chinese with vocabulary. In terms of category shifts, this report analyzes them from the perspective of structure shifts, class shifts, unit shifts and intra-system shifts. The target text can convey the same meaning in a different form from the original through category shifts.Based on these analyses,it can be concluded that translation shift theory can help translators overcome the difficulties in translating psychological texts, and can accurately convey the message of the original text and ensure the fluency of the translation.
