Along with the development of the technological revolution, artificial intelligence, cyborgs, virtual characters and other future technologies are gradually becoming a reality. There are abundant science fiction novels based on emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.Kazuo Ishiguro’s first science fiction Never Let Me Go,published in 2005,depicts a post-human picture that humans breeding clones to obtain organs. In 2021,Kazuo Ishiguro published his second science fiction,Klara and the Sun,in which Klara,an artificially intelligent friend,is an example of a robotic creature designed to serve middle-class families.Klara, like Cathy in Never Let Me Go,can sense emotions while facing life decisions.Currently, researches on science fiction about Kazuo Ishiguro focus on themes such as ethical dilemmas, utopian fiction, and spatial narratives. There is still much room for research on posthumanism. This paper analyzes the plight of posthuman in two scientific novels written by Kazuo Ishiguro,Never Let Me Go and Klara and the Sun,respectively.Clones are strictly guarded by Hailsham where clones are being treated brutally as a result of silently accepting the predetermined tragic death but are powerless to resist.Artificial intelligent robots face the crisis of being replaced by advanced generations due to the disorder of setting procedures. From an interdisciplinary perspective,it discusses the way out of the plight. To achieve a life scenario of equal dialogue and coexistence among all species in the posthuman era,it needs to break down anthropocentrism and establish an ethical system in line with technological development.Kazuo Ishiguro reflects on the existing perception of humanity through Klara’s perspective and proposes his ethical view of science and technology, which is optimistic about technology while affirming the special status of human beings. This view is consistent with the direction of posthumanism,in which posthuman technological products such as cyborgs and artificial intelligence can live in harmony with humans in the posthuman era.The crisis and plight of the posthuman era can be alleviated by establishing a sound technological ethical system to achieve a community of destiny between posthuman and human beings.Kazuo Ishiguro’s depiction of plight prompts us to reflect on the value of life as technological product and examine the relationship between human beings and technology. When the physical boundary between posthuman and human is broken, humans and other species will face the plight and challenges together.Meanwhile, posthumanism motivates us to rethink the established anthropocentric viewpoint and promote the concept of harmonious coexistence for the development of future society. |
