| Sign language is a visual-spatial language. For most deaf people,it is the primary tool for their daily communication and participation in social life.Given the relatively slow development of domestic research on sign language interpreting and the lack of professional sign language interpreters, the translator believes that it is necessary to learn from foreign experience in sign language interpreting and its professionalization. The translation report selects Chapter 5 from The Sign Language Interpreting Studies Reader, published by John Benjamins Publishing Company in 2015,as the translation material. It is a collection of academic papers on different development stages of sign language interpreting in foreign countries and their research results.Based on Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation, the translator discusses the application of different translation techniques in translation practice from lexical, syntactic, and textual levels.Under the guidance of semantic translation,in terms of the differences in wording and syntactic structure between English and Chinese, the translator mainly adopts translation techniques such as conversion of part of speech, amplification and restructuring to convey the semantics of the source text faithfully;under the guidance of communicative translation, aiming at the translation of slang, conjunctions, idioms and passive sentences, the translator uses Chinese four-character structure, addition of conjunctions, omission and conversion of passive voice to make the translation more in line with Chinese expression habits;due to the complex syntax and wealth of information in the source text, the combination of semantic and communicative translation helps to accurately reproduce the original information,so as to achieve certain communicative purposes. In addition, the difficulty of this translation task lies in the translation of long and complex sentences. The translator clarifies the logical relationship by division and restructuring and tries to make the writing authentic and fluent. In the translation of academic discourse, the comprehensive application of a variety of translation methods and techniques is more conducive to achieving the equivalent effect of translation through this translation practice. The translator hopes to provide some references for domestic sign language interpreting research and the translation of similar texts. |
