In the 21st century,more and more western academic original works are introduced into China,but translation works are still main materials for understanding western academic achievements.Academic translation,as an important branch of translation practice and study,plays an important role in western and Chinese academic exchanges and has a broad space for development.This translation report is completed based on the translation of Bilinguals'Existing Languages Benefit Vocabulary Learning in a Third Language,and the translation is performed under the guidance of Newmark's text typology and his translation methodology.There are five parts in this translation report,and the fourth part,which covers translation difficulties and corresponding translation methods,is the most important.In this part,the translation difficulties are selected from lexical,syntactic and textual levels.Specifically,at lexical level,the translation of terms,words with implicit meaning and nominalized words is described;at syntactic level,how to translate right-branching sentences and sentences with inanimate subjects is introduced;and the textual level is about how to realize the coherence of the whole context.In terms of the translation methods,since the importance of textual information is equivalent to that of content expressing methods,semantic translation and communicative translation are both used during the translation process.At lexical level,semantic translation is mainly used in the translation of terms for the fidelity to the original;and in other aspects of lexical level,communicative translation is also adopted.At syntactic level,in light of differences between Chinese and English,communicative translation is mainly used.As for right-branching sentences,the separation of sentences is used,and then sub-sentences are arranged according to Chinese expressions;and sentences with inanimate subjects are translated by means of adding proper subjects or using corresponding action verbs to lead the whole sentences.At textual level,reference and conjunction methods of grammatical cohesion are mainly used.The current author has gained a lot from this translation practice.Firstly,academic texts are characterized by its distinct language features,namely,preciseness,scientificity and objectiveness and belong to an informative type.Secondly,Newmark's text typology and his translation methodology have great guiding significance for academic translation,and semantic translation does not conflict with communicative translation even in academic translation.Thirdly,not only great translation ability,but also sufficient academic knowledge is required in academic translation.Finally,academic translation provides a basis for the development of academic study,and can prompt international academic communication.
