The report is a translation report from English to Chinese of popular science text.Translation materials are selected from the first part and the first five chapters of the second part of David Wallace-Wells’ s The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming,totaling more than 28,000 words.The book describes the cascade crisis brought on by climate change,the ideological impact of climate change,and how to face it.In view of the current seriousness of global warming,the translator hopes that through the translation of this book,readers can realize that global warming is closely related to everyone,and that only action can make a difference.In the process of translation,Reiss’ s translation-oriented text type theory is helpful for translation as follows: it is helpful to determine the type of text,analyze the characteristics of the text,and then select the appropriate translation methods according to the desired text effect.Therefore,under the text type theory,combined with the characteristics of popular science text,it is determined that the main text type of the selected translation is informative text type,supplemented by operative text type.Through the translation methods and techniques such as interpretation,addition,omission,conversion,transposition,cutting,and so on,the content-focused text is translated to achieve the text effect of accurately conveying the content and information contained in the original text in the language form of the target language;in order to retain the intrinsic appeal of the original text and achieve the effect of arousing readers’ specific responses and encouraging them to participate in specific behaviors,the appeal-focused text is translated utilizing translation methods and techniques such as addition and omission,synchronization and recasting.Through this translation practice,the translator comes to the following conclusions:From the perspective of text typology,the content-focused text of popular science text should accurately convey the content,data or information of the original text,while the appeal-focused text should retain the purpose of the original text,and the translated text should also arouse specific responses of readers.On the premise of achieving various effects,translation methods and techniques are selected.The translator hopes that by translating the book,readers will become aware of the dangers of global warming and take action.
