Translation Strategies For Complex Sentences In Popular Science Text From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

Climate change has widespread and significant impacts on human health,so the study of medical meteorological texts is of great significance to global well-being.The source text for this translation practice report comes from Climate Change and Global Public Health,which was published in 2021.The book edited by Kent E.Pinkerton and William N.Rom,who are co-chairs of climate change seminars and symposiums.The book mainly explains how global climate change affects human health,presenting data and methods in this field to help people understand the relationship between global climate change and human health.Climate Change and Global Public Health is a popular science text aimed at disseminating scientific knowledge and useful information to the public and influencing readers’ thinking and life attitudes by conveying positive information.However,the source text contains many complex sentences with complex syntactic structure and much information,posing challenges for translation.The report focuses on how to translate complex English sentences concisely and convey the accuracy,completeness,and professionalism of the source text information to meet the reading needs of the target language readers.Guided by Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory,the translator summarizes the translation methods of complex sentences in the source text,hoping to provide reference for the study of complex sentence translation.For complex sentences with object clauses,the translator proposes the translation methods of sequencing and synthesization;for complex sentences with attributive clauses,the translator proposes the methods of cutting,embedding,reversing,and amplification;for complex sentences with adverbial clauses,the translator proposes the translation methods of reversing,sequencing and synthesization.This report has six chapters.Chapter One introduces the report’s significance and structure.Chapter Two describes the translation task,including the source text’s main content and language features.Chapter Three depicts the translation process: pre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation.Chapter Four is the theory and research object,which expounds the definition of complex sentences,Communicative Translation Theory and its applicability in translating complex English sentences in popular science texts.Chapter Five is a case study.Following the Communicative Translation Theory,the translator mainly analyzes the translation strategies for different types of complex sentences in the source text.Chapter Six summarizes the findings and limitations of the report.
