A Report On The E-C Translation Of Power Systems In Transition (Excerpt)

Enhancing the security of the power system is a major goal of the power system transition in worldwide.Power Systems in Transition analyzes the current situation of the transition of the global power system,especially the experience of power system transition in developed economies,such as Europe and the United States,which can be used as a reference for China’s power system transition.Therefore,the translation practice is significant for China’s successful power system transition.The source text of this English-Chinese translation practice is excerpted from the energy report Power Systems in Transition,which is an informative text.The source text accounts for 16,333 words and is translated into 22,525 characters in the target text.Guided by the Skopos Theory,typical translation difficulties are analyzed and lexical and syntactical solutions are proposed in this translation report.At the lexical level,the source text involves many technical and semi-technical words.Based on the Fidelity Rule and the Skopos Rule,the literal translation is adopted to ensure that the translation is accurate and professional;based on the Skopos Rule and the Coherence Rule,the translation technique of part-of-speech conversion is adapted to translate the nominalization structure,achieving the communicative purpose of the translation;based on the Coherence Rule,adaptation is made to translate non-technical words to enhance the readability of the translation.At the syntactical level,under the guidance of the Coherence Rule,voice shift is adopted for passive structures to make the translation coherent in the target language;under the guidance of the Skopos Rule and the Fidelity Rule,the long and complicated sentences are split and reorganized into short sentences to enhance the coherence of the translation in the target text.Through this translation practice,the translator’s ability to use Skopos Theory to guide translation practice has been improved,hoping to provide a reference for translating texts of power system transition.
