A Report On The C-E Translation Of Adulting And Sanctifying-The Essence Of Confucian Ethics And Morality (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Variation Translation Theory

Social science is the study of various social phenomena,including politics,economics,law,history,ethics,etc.The book Adulting and Sanctifying-The Essence of Confucian Ethics and Morality is a social science text with great information and strong educational significance.Based on and sourced from the traditional Confucian ethical and moral system,the book provides a systematic analysis of the major ethical perspectives of Confucianism.The chapter 6 of the book was chosen as the translation material in this translation task,which mainly discusses family morality with the help of traditional Confucian views.There are many words with Chinese characteristics and Confucian classical expressions.At the same time,there are lots of ellipses,long and complicated sentences in the ST.Variation translation theory emphasizes that when a translation needs to meet the different reading needs of readers at different levels,different variants should be used to deal with the information of the ST so that knowledge and information can be transmitted more effectively.As more and more Confucian works are published abroad,more and more foreigners are interested in Confucian culture and,indeed,in traditional Chinese cultures.The target readers of this report are foreign readers who are interested in and want to get more comprehensive and detailed information of Chinese traditional ethical and moral culture,whose reading needs are to understand the traditional Chinese family virtues and to further familiarize with Chinese traditional culture.In that case,the author selects six translation methods of the theory for translation practice:amplification,deletion,editing,condensation,combination,rewriting and narration,which specifically mean adding details to insufficient information,deleting partially repetitive and useless information,re-editing misordered information,curtailing redundant information,combine information with the same topic and narrating complex Chinese sentences.This translation practice shows that,according to Variation Translation Theory,translators should use different translation techniques in a reasonable way based on the reading needs of different readers to enhance the communication efficiency of the information of the ST while translating social science texts.This translation practice can not only reflect the guiding role of Variaton Translation Theory in the translation of the selected material,provide some reference for the later translation of social science texts,but also enable Western readers to better understand the traditional Chinese ethical and moral culture,and promote world cultural exchange and cultural integration.
