The source text of the present translation practice is obtained from the first Chapter of Daniel J.Siegel’s popular science book Aware: The Science and Practice of Presence, which was published in 2018.This book reveals how to develop a “Wheel of Awareness” which might literally empower people to focus attention, grow a healthier brain and reduce fear, anxiety and stress in their life.By tackling the problems in the translation process, the present translation practice is intended to achieve the accurate translation of the source text under the guidance of Huang Zhonglian’s Translation Variation Theory. This book affiliates to the popular science text, which has plenty of terminologies and is markedly different from Chinese syntax. At the same time,it is characterized by popularity, literariness and entertainment. The translators are required to comprehend the meaning of professional terms and convert them to accurate and appropriate expressions recognized by target readers in the process of translating popular science texts to achieve the effect of faithfulness to the source texts. In addition, some descriptive languages could be added or deleted to deliver the main information clearly. The translator has taken Huang Zhonglian’s theory as guidance to this translation practice, which consists of seven appropriate adaptations and insists that the source text can be flexibly changed in order to answer the special demand of specific readers under specific conditions. This translation report analyzes 33 typical examples under the guidance of appropriate adaptations, such as deletion, remolding, edition and supplement,as well as more specific translation methods, for example explanation, comment and writing. This translation practice gains insight that Huang’s Translation Variation Theory has a strong practicability for guiding the translation of English texts in the field of mental health.
