Shiba Ryotaro(1923-1996)was a well-known Japanese historical novelist and commentator whose series of works have gained immense popularity in Japan,earning him the title of a national author alongside Natsume Soseki and Yoshikawa Eiji.As one of his representative works,Saka no Ue no Kumo became the most influential and popular literary work in Japan in the 20 th century survey conducted by Spring and Autumn of Literature and Art.The novel is about two important battles in Japan during the Meiji period,namely The Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 and the Russo-Japanese War,with the two Akiyama brothers and Masao Ka Shiki as the main characters.While praising the spirit of the Meiji period,the historical narrative and historical view presented in Saka no Ue no Kumo have also received joint attention from scholars in China and Japan.Through a narrative mode that blurs the nature of war and justifies it,as well as beautifying Japan’s aggression in The Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895,Shiba Ryotaro constructs a non-binary war nature and Japanese victim image.This article analyzes the narrative of The Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895,explores the characteristics of Shiba Ryotaro’s historical narrative and historical perspective,and analyzes the biases in his war narrative.This article is divided into three parts.The first part is the introduction,which summarizes the current research status of Shiba Ryotaro and Saka no Ue no Kumo at home and abroad and clarifies the research ideas.The second part is the main body,which is divided into three chapters.The first chapter provides an overview of Shiba Ryotaro’s life and basic information on his literary creation.The source of his historical novel creation lies in his own military experience and career as a journalist,which also reflects his early love for the culture of the Asian continent and nomadic peoples.The second chapter analyzes the narrative of The Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 in Saka no Ue no Kumo through a close reading of the text.The first section analyzes the narrative of the causes and nature of the war,exploring the deeper reasons for Shiba Ryotaro’s erroneous depictions of the nature of war as non-binary,geographical factors in the causes of war,and victim consciousness.The second section analyzes the narrative of the war process,interpreting Shiba Ryotaro’s construction of a just war narrative mode in the novel.The third section analyzes the narrative of the war’s impact,exploring the specific expressions of Shiba Ryotaro’s beautification of Japan’s aggression in the novel and its effects.The third chapter elaborates the historical narrative techniques in Saka no Ue no Kumo and its impact.The first section discusses the characteristics of Saka no Ue no Kumo and its role in Shiba Ryotaro’s development of historical narrative methods.The second section discusses the academic and social impact of Saka no Ue no Kumo pointing out the special nature of Shiba Ryotaro’s historical perspective and narrative.The third part is the conclusion.Through a summary analysis of the narrative of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 and the characteristics of historical narrative techniques in Saka no Ue no Kumo,it is concluded that Shiba Ryotaro’ achieves his purpose of promoting the Meiji spirit and glorifying the image of the Japanese nation by fragmenting historical facts and blurring the nature of the war’s aggression.Saka no Ue no Kumo both inspires the spirit of the Japanese people and affects the construction of public historical perceptions because Shiba Ryotaro mixes his subjective evaluation in the historical narrative.
