Film semiotics has open meaning mechanism,and each film narrative can become a new exploration of the mode of intention.The film semiotics is used to make the analysis of films,which aims at clarifying the cultural significance of film art and discussing art in a cultural sense instead of looking for artistic beauty in films.In this thesis,the theory of film semiotics will be used to analyze Wong Kar-wai’s films,the film is used as a symbolic carrier for ideographic elements and meaning expression.The interpretation for the meaning given to the film by the director relies on symbols,and images from the objective world and reality are the expressive symbols,so the richer connotation can be generated.The extreme shooting techniques are adopted by the director Wong Kar-wai discussed in this thesis to assist with freehand brushwork,so that the audience are able to clearly identify and feel comfortable for watching films.Containing their own aesthetic and ideological connotations,the symbolic images let the audience have a unique audio-visual experience.The theory of film semiotics is used to carry out the analysis on the symbolic use of Wong Kar-wai’s films in four directions.In the first direction,the unique cultural symbols of the two cities of Hong Kong and Shanghai are focused on to explore their historical culture and the cultural connections between the two cities.In the second direction,the spatial symbols are taken as the starting points to pay attention to the selection of urban space in films,explore the expression of characters’ emotions from the positional relationship between space and characters,explore the image style of Wong Kar-wai’s film creation in line with the cultural significance carried by the symbols,get clear of the deep meaning represented by various urban spatial images,as well as clarify how the content and significance therein are revealed through the symbols.In the third direction,the modeling symbols are analyzed,and the modeling symbols in Wong Kar-wai’s films are analyzed through three directions of color,shooting techniques,and the extension of the connotation of the object image,with an intention of elaborately interpreting the irrational and unspeakable images in the current context of the film.In the fourth direction,the auditory symbols in the film such as sound,music,and human voice are taken as the research objects,and the simulated acoustic symbols and repeated variations of music are analyzed,so the unique creative style and charm of Director Wong Kar-wai in terms of hearing can be displayed.
