| Since ancient times,as a common drink in social occasions,wine has a close connection with people’s social life.As a classic ancient Chinese novel,Honglou Meng(the Story of the Stone)tells the rise and fall of four major families,including many scenes of drinking alcohol.Different types of alcohol have different metaphorical meanings,and understanding these meanings is benefit to a deeper understanding of the plot development,character relationships,and thematic expression in the book.George Lakoff and Mark Johnson proposed the rationale,basic properties,and philosophical implications of conceptual metaphor theory(hereinafter referred to as CMT).Metaphor theory regards metaphor as a cognitive tool,and the projection from the source domain to the target domain can help us more clearly understand the social and human feelings and Chinese culture conveyed by the novel through alcohol.Therefore,this thesis carefully studies the English version of Honglou Meng translated by David Hawkes from the perspective of focusing on,CMT of cognitive linguistics identifying and analyzing the conceptual metaphors of the sentences involving wine in the text,and exploring the strategies and methods of conceptual metaphor in a targeted manner.Research has found that David Hawkes uses a translation strategy that focuses on “keep the vehicle,foreignizing translation” “change the vehicle,domesticating translation” as well as literal translation,transliteration,and word to word translation to deal with the metaphor of wine culture in the original text.On the basis of the smooth translation,he effectively conveys the metaphorical meaning of wine to the readers.Therefore,when translating wine,it is necessary to attach importance to the translation of metaphorical meanings,making it easier for the target reader to intuitively understand the driving role of wine in the plot and the interpretation of the characters in the book,so as to better grasp the plot and theme of Honglou Meng(The Story of the Stone). |
