Beauvoir is one of the most important representatives of feminist thought in the 20th century, and her masterpiece The Second Sex provides a profound analysis and discussion of women’s living conditions. In this paper,we interpret the feminist ideas advocated by Beauvoir in The Second Sex from the perspective of Marx’s human liberation.According to Beauvoir, women have long been in an oppressive and passive "other" position, which is not natural but caused by social and cultural structures. She emphasized that women should break away from traditional concepts and strive for self-liberation and equal rights through independent work and education,so as to liberate themselves from their inner nature and realize their transcendence. As a representative of the second wave of feminism in the West,Beauvoir’s thought embodied an existentialist perspective and, unlike the traditional feminist movement, was still confined to the dichotomy of "male and female".Marxism,on the other hand, believes that women’s liberation and human liberation are inextricably linked. Therefore,Marxism’s analysis of women’s liberation starts from a more macroscopic perspective of human liberation, transcending the dichotomy between men and women, the entanglement of details, and the contradictions of the current stage, and discusses women’s liberation from a more macroscopic and long-term perspective. The Marxist view is that women’s emancipation cannot be truly achieved through the guarantee of women’s rights.Only through socialist revolution, the elimination of capitalist private ownership and class exploitation relations, and the establishment of a socialist economic, political and cultural system, can the goal of women’s liberation and human liberation be truly realized. In The Second Sex,Beauvoir profoundly and comprehensively discusses the historical and real situation of women and analyzes the reasons for the formation of women’s status, which can be regarded as the "bible" for women’s rights. Moreover,in discussing women’s emancipation,Beauvoir uses the word "freedom" to point to the goal of women’s emancipation, which reflects the progressive nature of Beauvoir’s thought. In a socialist society, women enjoy equal rights and status with men,can fully participate in social production and management, and receive full support and assistance in public works as well as in family and personal life, achieving full freedom. In short,Beauvoir’s feminist thought is thorough and comprehensive in its analysis of women, but its existentialist dichotomy and the path of emancipation she proposes from the broad perspective of Marxism are somewhat narrow and crude, and fail to show the true path of women’s emancipation.Nevertheless, the concern for women and the disadvantaged groups embodied in her thought and the construction of a new human relationship sought by her are new inspirations for contemporary society to rethink the relationship between human beings. |
