A Study Of Suppressing Bandits In Eastern Sichuan In The Preliminary Period Of Liberation

The bandit suppression struggle in eastern Sichuan in the early days of liberation was an important part of the new China’s Sichuan bandit suppression struggle.Based on the published archives and existing county records as well as literary and historical data,this paper focuses on the social background,course,policy and effect of the bandit suppression in the early liberation period of eastern Sichuan,so as to clarify and reveal its development law,characteristics and historical significance.Therefore,the eradication of bandits is an urgent problem that must be solved in the early days of liberation in eastern Sichuan.Under the leadership of the Southwest Bureau of the Communist Party of China and the Southwest Military Region,the eastern Sichuan Military Region set up a bandit suppression organization in January 1950,mobilized relevant bandit suppression forces,and set up a bandit suppression headquarters and joint defense area.At the early stage of the bandit suppression,the bandit suppression forces realized the transformation from regular warfare to guerrilla warfare,and then focused on the destruction of the two core areas of Bishan and Fuling bandits,and then combined with Hunan,Hubei and Guizhou provinces to organize suppression,and finally consolidate the bandit suppression in the whole region.In the process of suppressing bandits,the troops took military strikes as the main method,gradually improved the policy of political differentiation and disintegration,paid attention to the development of mass work,and formulated and implemented correct ethnic policies in the Tujia and Miao inhabited areas in the southeast of Sichuan.Finally,after more than two years of arduous struggle,a total of more than 200,000 bandits were wiped out in eastern Sichuan.By discussing the background,process,policy and effect of bandit suppression in eastern Sichuan in the early days of liberation,this paper clarifies and reveals its development law,characteristics and historical significance,and points out that the completion of this political and military task laid a foundation for the consolidation of political power,land reform,social stability,resisting America and assisting Korea in eastern Sichuan at that time.
