The Translation Of Subject Ellipsis Sentences In Chinese Political Discourse From The Perspective Of The Appraisal Theory

As a representative phenomenon in Chinese political discourse,appropriate translation of subject ellipsis sentences will be conducive to the communication of Chinese philosophies,principles and policies.Therefore,a myriad of studies has been carried out under various schools of thoughts to uncover the mechanism of Chinese political discourse translation.This thesis focuses on analyzing the translation of subject ellipsis sentences from the perspective of Appraisal Theory.Through comparing the distribution of appraisal resources in the source and target text of subject ellipsis sentences in Chinese political discourse,this thesis aims to discover the faithfulness of translation,and intends to explore how translator engages attitude and stance by means of appraisal resources,and thus constructs Chinese political discourse and influences the judgment of target readers.Collected from Xi Jinping:The Governance of China Ⅳ,subject ellipsis sentences are processed by UAM CorpusTool to obtain scientific statics.The results demonstrate that both source text and target text have an array of Attitude,Engagement and Graduation resources in terms of the distribution of appraisal resources in subject ellipsis sentence in Chinese political discourse,with the attitude resources accounting for the majority of the total appraisal resources.Graduation resources in both texts are almost the same.In terms of Engagement resources,more subjects have been added in the target text,explicitizing the actor who takes actions or those being addressed to take actions.The principle of faithfulness has been employed during the whole translation process.Apart from that,some shifts in the translation of different appraisal resources in subject ellipsis sentences,including addition,omission and modulation,are the results from ideology influences from the patronage,target readers as well as translator.Translator’s poetological nature of language is determined by the prevailing literary trend and particular translation language norms of Chinese political discourse.Besides,some adjustments have also contributed to the political image building of China.Above all,this thesis has also verified the applicability of the Appraisal Theory in analyzing the translation of subject ellipsis sentences in Chinese political discourse.
