This thesis mainly discusses the translation of political and economic texts under the guidance of Chesterman’s Translation Norm with a case study of China’s Economic Arrival: Decoding A Disruptive Rise. The source text is analytically driven and it provides novel perspectives, context, granular data, and policy conclusions that get lost in the daily churn of news cycles. The volume of the selected part of the translation program grapples squarely with how China’s economic, political, and technological developments have transformed not only itself but also the world at large. The translator should recreate both the context and attitude of the source text in target language with idiomatic style.Chesterman classifies the translation norms into two categories, which are expectancy norms and professional norms.Expectancy norms refer to the target readers’ expectations of the target text and their concerning of what a translation should be like.Professional norms can be further classified into three branches, which are accountability norm, communication norm and relation norm. Therefore, the translation norm theory can act as a guidance, guiding translators to work on different conditions by making use of different translating strategies which are influenced by translation norms. With specific translation cases, this report explores how to translate the political and economic text under the guidance of Chesterman’s translation norm theory to improve readability and acceptability of translated version so that it is well illustrated how significant Chesterman’s translation norm theory is in translating the political and economic text.
