Martial arts terminology is an important part of Chinese martial arts novels.Whether the English translation of martial arts terminology can be accepted by foreign readers with its rich cultural connotations is essential in the success of Chinese literary works going abroad.This thesis takes the martial arts terminology translation in Jin Yong’s novel Legends of the Condor Heroes as the study focus,based on reception theory,it adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods to investigate the reception of martial arts terminology translation from the perspective of readers’ expectations and readers’ acceptance.Factors influencing translation reception are analyzed from the classifications and characteristics of martial arts terminology,aiming to provide a reference for martial arts terminology translation and help Chinese literary works going abroad,further promote the international dissemination of Chinese martial arts culture.This study conducts a questionnaire survey among 300 UK teachers and students from Confucius Classrooms,the results show that the respondents have a low reception of MAT translation in Legends of the Condor Heroes,and the specific performances are as follows:(1)the translator’s translation strategies and methods and the quality of the translation cannot meet the readers’ expectations;(2)the readers have difficulty in understanding of martial arts terminology,resulting in a low evaluation of the English translation of martial arts terminology;(3)English translation problems such as multiple translations of one word have a significant impact on readers’ reception and reading experience.Furthermore,combined with the reception theory,this thesis analyzes the main factors that influence the reception of MAT among British readers:(1)The classifications and characteristics of martial arts terminology affect the translators’ applied translation strategies and methods,as well as the quality of their translation;(2)The lack of standardization of martial arts terminology affects the reception of target language readers;(3)The heterogeneity of Chinese and Western cultures affects readers’expectations.Based on the survey results and analysis of influencing factors,this study puts forward the following suggestions:(1)Translators should have a solid language skills with specialized knowledge in a certain area,adopt appropriate translation strategies and methods to ensure to ensure the accuracy and scientificity of the translation;(2)A special corpus of martial arts terminology should be designed and developed to standardize the martial arts terminology translation;(3)Various mass media forms that are more in line with readers’reception can be used to adapt to the cultural heterogeneity,so as to promote the overseas dissemination of Chinese literary works and Chinese martial arts culture.
