| The original text of Legends of the Condor Heroes I,a long martial arts novel created by Jin Yong, has always been pursued and flattered by readers at home and abroad. As for the English versions,Holmwood’s translation of the first volume has aroused an unprecedented warm response in the English world. Therefore, the study of this highly praised English translation can not only provide a reference for the translation of other martial arts novels, but also offer an inspiration to Chinese culture to go global. The phenomenon of explicitation and implicitation of translation universals has attracted great attention since it was put forward and its existence has been proved by many previous studies. In addition, the study of the way behind the explicitation and implicitation in the translation of Legends of the Condor Heroes I will help to further explore the translator’s translation process in depth. On the basis of systematic functional linguistics, this thesis sets up an analysis framework of explicitation and implicitation referring to Hu Kaibao’s classification of explicitation and implicitation to study the related questions in the Legends of the Condor Heroes I.The problems to be solved are as follows: First, what are the types and distribution of explicitation and implicitation in the Legends of the Condor Heroes I ? Second, what translation methods are used by Holmwood to realize explicitation and implicitation in the Legends of the Condor Heroes I? Third,What are the reasons behind the explicitation and implicitation in the Legends of the Condor Heroes I? To handle these questions,a comparative study method is applied in the thesis. To begin with,by comparing with the ST,all the different types of explicitation and implicitation in the TT are marked and listed one by one.Afterwards,by further analyzing the differences between them, this paper reveals how Homewood realizes these explicitation and implicitation. Finally, through qualitative analysis, this paper analyzes the reasons behind explicitation and implicitation from five aspects. The study found that, first of all, there are 1116 cases of explicitation and 1227 cases of implicitation in the translation. The proportion of ideational functional information, interpersonal functional information and textual functional information in explicitation is close to that in implicitation: the ideational functional information takes up the heaviest part, followed by textual functional information and interpersonal functional information.By comparison, under the category of ideational functional information, implicitation outnumbers explicitation, while in textual functional information, cohesion explicitation is far more than cohesion implicitation. And,as to interpersonal functional meaning, the mood implicitation far exceeds mood explicitation. Then,in terms of the techniques employed by Holmwood, the ideational functional information of explicitation is primarily attained through translation techniques such as amplification, connotation announcement, pragmatic revelation, imitation, and variation;interpersonal functions information are primarily attained through imitation, amplification, and variation;and textual functional information explicitation is primarily attained through imitation, amplification, and connotation announcement. When it comes to implicitation, interpersonal and textual functional information are more readily realized through imitation and variation than ideational functional information, which is primarily realized through imitation and omission. Finally, the explicitation and implicitation in the Legends of the Condor Heroes I can be attributed to five main reasons.First, there are varying ideologies of the author, translator, and readers. The second is the linguistic distinctions between English and Chinese.Third,China and the West have quite different cultures. The fourth is the subjective initiative of the translator as a free, independent person. The consideration of readers by the translator before, during, and after translation is the fifth factor. |
