Deterioration of geological environments has an increasingly adverse effect on human life, and geological resources have to be utilized on a rational basis.UNDERSTANDING EARTH(5th edition)comprises six sections, roughly 290,000 words. This book delves into the contemporary theory and practice of geology and the basic geological processes and Earth system, intending to produce a more habitable living environment and peaceful co-existence with nature.Based on the understanding of the original text, the translator selects the ten chapters, and the total translated word count is just over 100,000 words to carry out the translation practice.Built on the E-C translation practice of the text UNDERSTANDING EARTH,this report analyzed the overall language characteristics of the translated book at three levels. At the lexical level,as a geological text,it contained a plethora of technical terms and acronyms, involving many professional fields. At the syntactic level, the original contained no shortage of long and complex sentences,as well as a passive tone.At the discourse level, the original text was logically rigorous and structurally complete.Variational Translation Theory takes variational translation as its core and on this basis twelve translation methods are formed, which constitute the complete system of the theory.Seven translation approaches are most widely used according to the needs of readers under specific conditions. The theory is aimed at readers and can guide translation practice of applied texts such as science and technology.Based on the linguistic characteristics of the text and the guidance of Variational Translation Theory, this translation report selects three translation strategies: addition, condensation and compilation. It discusses the solutions to translation difficulties involving vocabulary, syntax and discourse. The translation of specialized terms and the realization of discourse cohesion are discussed respectively from the strategic perspective of addition. This helps to realize proper translation of English geological terms and reconstructs the textual cohesion of the original text.the translation of acronyms and convoluted sentences with subordinate relationships and complex components is addressed from the perspective of condensation.Compilation is used to translate passive sentences and reorder words to transmit core information and obtain discourse coherence. The present report is intended to address the theoretical importance of in practice, and promote public accessibility to and awareness of environmental protection. While the present report addressed the inspirations from and problems in translation,it also presented the limitations in the practice, providing a reference for future study.
