A Report On E-C Translation Of Earth As Art

In the context of globalization,the cultural exchanges between countries and regions have been continually strengthened,and the power of culture is becoming increasingly important.In recent years,cultural exchanges between China and other countries have become an important part of international exchanges.China has been absorbing the advanced culture of other countries and at the same time spreading its excellent culture out to the world.To respect cultural diversity is an inevitable requirement for the prosperity of the worlds culture,and to strengthen cultural exchanges has become an integral part of Chinese modernization construction.The development of popular science translation can not only supplement domestic science popularization work,but it also can popularize scientific knowledge to the publicThis report is based on the translation of the book Earth as Art by Lawrence Fried1,who serves as the director of the Applied Sciences Program within the Earth Science Division at NASA Headquarters.The report mainly covers four chapters.Chapter 1 introduces the source material,describes the features of the source material and background,and points out the significance of the task.Chapter 2 describes the process of the translation task,including the detailed description of preparations before translation,quality control and translation process Chapter 3 is the most important part of this report.It introduces the translation theory used in this report,analyzes some cases at lexical,syntactic and discourse levels under the guidance of Functional Equivalence with regard to the problems occurring during the translation process,and sums up the commonly-used translation skills including conversion,amplification,omission and annotation.Chapter 4 summarizes the experience the author obtained from this translation task,points out the existing problems in the translation work,and provides some suggestions for translating similar texts.Through the translation of the selected material and the writing of this report,the author has acquired a great deal of knowledge in geophysical and environmental information and improved her ability to analyze and comprehend English texts and her ability to recombine and express the meanings in Chinese.Besides,this translation task is also conducive to the Chinese people to expand their horizons and realize the beauty of the earth.
