Report On C-E Translation Of 2021 Report On The Work Of Dongyang Municipality Government:Difficulties In Translating Parallelism And Their Coping Tactics

This report is based on the author’s translation project of 2021 Report on the Work of Dongyang Municipality Government.The text of the project is released at the fifth session of the 15 th People’s Congress of Dongyang Municipality on February 4,2021.The main task of this project is to translate this government report into English and solve the difficulties arising from it.In the process of translating the 2021 Report on the Work of Dongyang Municipality Government,the author finds that the difficulty of the project mainly lies in translating the parallelism in it.Based on a review of the definition of parallelism and related studies,the author believes that there are two major types of parallel structures that pose difficulties for translation:(1)parallelism with implicit information;(2)parallelism with semantic repetition.The former is mainly manifested in the implicit information in the governance terms with Chinese characteristics and the implicit information caused by the fuzziness of Chinese language,while the latter can be further broken down into full semantic repetition and partial semantic repetition.In order to solve the above difficulties,the author adopts eco-translatology theory,which highlights translator-centered adaptation and selection.Under the theoretical guidance,the author uses the three-dimensional transformations by achieving adaptive transformations at linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions.First,for parallelism with implicit information,the author follows explicitation translation strategy.Specifically,for the implicit information embedded in the governance terms with Chinese characteristics,the implicit information is revealed through explanation;while for the implicit information caused by the fuzziness of Chinese language is manifested by addition.With regard to parallelism with semantic repetition,the author adopts the strategy of simplification.In the case of full semantic repetition,the repeated parts are omitted,while in the case of partial semantic repetition,the repeated parts are combined.It shows that the above translation theory and translation tactics have effectively solved the difficulties in translating parallelism of 2021 Report on the Work of Dongyang Municipality Government.Through this project,the author improves her translation skills and accumulates experience in translating government texts.
