A C-E Translation Report On 2021 Third Quarter Research Report Of China’s Real Estate Market:Difficulties In Achieving Expressive Effects Of Trend Expressions And Coping Tactics

The paper draws on a C-E translation practice of 2021 Third Quarter Research Report of China’s Real Estate Market published by Beijing China Index Academy on October 15,2021.The report summarizes the situation of China’s real estate market in the third quarter of 2021 and explores the trend of China’s real estate market in the fourth quarter.The difficulties of the translation task are notable and the author tries a variety of translation countermeasures through classification,analysis and summary.The translation report is concerned chiefly with the difficulties of how to translate the trend expressions widely used in the original text to fully achieve their expressive effects.“Trend expression” refers to the language used to describe the state of quantitative changes in data reports.According to the differences in linguistic features of trend expressions between English and Chinese,the difficulties can be classified into the following three categories:(1)difficulties in avoiding repetition of trend expressions;(2)difficulties in achieving proper collocation of trend expressions;(3)difficulties in enhancing the rhetorical effect of trend expressions.Chesterman classifies the norms that affect translation products and behaviors into two categories: expectancy norms and professional norms.In order to meet the translation expectations and standards proposed by the two categories of norms,Chesterman then puts forward corresponding understanding strategies and production strategies.In the light of Chesterman’s translation norms,coping tactics for the above difficulties are proposed as follows:(1)“paraphrase” and “distribution change” are adopted for avoiding repetition of trend expressions;(2)“particularization” and “transposition” are adopted for achieving proper collocation of trend expressions;(3)“trope change” and “explicitness change” are adopted for enhancing the rhetorical effect of trend expressions.The above coping tactics are proved to be effective in solving the difficulties in translating trend expressions in the real estate market research report.Meanwhile,the author hopes that the report will enrich the research on trend expressions in financial texts and provide sound reference for future translators whenever such problems arise.
