The geographic river,one of the most basic forms of existence in the diverse ecosystems on the earth,represents an important part of life on earth and a foundation for human survival and development.The source text of this translation report is excerpted from an informative book River Planet: Rivers from Deep Time to the Modern Crisis written by Martin Gibling.It shows us an epic geological history of the world’s rivers.Through the practice of English-Chinese translation,this paper aims to analyze the translation strategy and techniques for geographic texts based on communicative translation,which,taking into account the context and features of the text,can reach professionalization,standardization and objectivity as well as consider the acceptability of the target readers,thus promoting the popularization of professional geoscience.From the perspective of communicative translation,a series of translation problems and corresponding strategies or techniques are mainly induced from the three levels of lexis,syntax and discourse.At the lexical level,the translation techniques are as follows: the conversion of common words into geographic terminologies,lexical extension of meaning,and the use of four-character expressions;At the syntactic level,the translation of passive voice patterns and long difficult sentences as well as logical cohesion through the adjustment of word order and the dealt of conjunction are clearly elucidated;And at the discourse level,explicitation through annotation and interpretation,discourse coherence are adopted to achieve internal logic and stylistic consistency.Through the above translation strategies and methods,the translator has enhanced the readability of the translated text and achieved the purpose of communication in an appropriate way.
