The source text of this translation report is excerpted from Homeland Insecurity: The Arab American and Muslim American Experience After 9·11,a book published in 2009 by the Russell Sage Foundation in New York and authored by Professor Louis A.Cainkar of Marquette University.Cainkar conducts a sociological and ethnographic study of Arab American and Muslim communities in the city of Chicago to analyze the questioning,discrimination,and shifts in identity experiences of Arab Americans and Muslims in the aftermath of 9·11 in this book.The excerpted text for this translation practice task focuses on documenting in-depth interviews with five groups of Arab Americans and Muslim Americans after 9·11.This book is an ethnographic work that combines subject-object interview-style fieldwork.It serves as both an academic and a communicative piece,incorporating a diverse range of professional knowledge,specialized vocabulary,formal language expressions,as well as indicative pronouns and colloquial expressions.The translation practice is conducted under the guidance of the “three-dimensional transformation” strategy of “Eco-Translatology”,which mainly includes three phases:pre-translation preparation,translation practice and post-translation evaluation.On the basis of fully understanding the characteristics of the source text and the “three-dimensional transformation” strategy,the author analyzes and classifies the typical translation cases in terms of language dimension,cultural dimension and communicative dimension,and put forward the targeted translation strategies and methods.In the language dimension,methods of lexical conversion,passive voice conversion and sentence structural division to adapt to the structure of Chinese expression have been adopted;in the cultural dimension,methods of adding notes and using four-character words instead to compensate for the cultural differences between Chinese and Western have been applied;in the communicative dimension,methods of pronoun concretization and additional translation to eliminate the communicative barriers have been used.Upon completing this translation practice,the author has not only acquired valuable insights but also identified areas for improvement.Drawing upon these analyses and summaries,the author aspires to offer a valuable reference for translation practice and research pertaining to similar types of texts.
