American writer Pearl S.Buck’s The Good Earth won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1938,which made it the first Chinese-themed work to win that prize. The book, representing the real aspect of modern China to the West, shatters those remarks that “demonize” Chinese people, and greatly changes westerners’ wrong understanding of China. It makes indelible contributions to the cultural communication between the East and the West.Through the comparative analysis of the Chinese and English texts of the first section of this book,Good Earth, the writer finds that in the process of the translation, the translator has made flexible adjustments at the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions, considering the expectations of Chinese readers. Therefore, this thesis adopts Eco-translatology Theory, takes the translation method of “three-dimensional transformation” as the starting point, and analyzes the translation strategies adopted by Professor Wang Fengzhen in the process of translating Good Earth into Chinese text.It is also proposed that translators should make the translation text adapt to the translational eco-environment and choose appropriate translation methods flexibly when facing the differences between the two languages. This paper discusses the adjustment of lexicon and syntax in linguistic dimension. In terms of cultural dimension, this thesis explores the back translation strategies of idiomatic expressions and culture-loaded words. The translator localized the English expressions to reproduce the traditional Chinese culture in the translation. In terms of communicative dimension, this thesis finds that the translator adopts the translation methods of omission and addition flexibly to realize the bilingual communication intention. This study applies Eco-translatology Theory in the study of translation practice, broadening the application range of this theory, and providing a new theoretical perspective for the study of Chinese translation of Good Earth.
