As an element of character standing between the protagonist and the goal pursued by the protagonist, the antagonist not only plays a role in promoting the development of the plot, successfully externalizing the difficulty of the pursuit of the goal but also plays a vital role in shaping the character of the protagonist and showing the growth of the protagonist.Due to the one-time and instantaneous characteristics of the film,it is an inevitable requirement for the audience to remember this antagonist as soon as possible.Based on human experience from generation to generation and the common memory across geographical space, the character archetype is undoubtedly an ancillary process to get twice the result with half the effort. However, the discussion of character archetypes at all levels focuses on the protagonist. In the process of script creation, the antagonist is usually an accessory of the protagonist as the antagonist’s opposite. Can the antagonist also belong to a certain type of character archetype? If so,which character archetypes can be mapped by antagonists, and which archetypes can be reflected as antagonists?Starting from the opposite value of the weakest and relatively independent of the three antagonistic forces and taking the example of the femme fatale, this paper opens up the possibility of incorporating the antagonist into the archetype framework of the character. In addition to the character archetype of Aphrodite(the femme fatale),it also summarises the character archetypes that can be mapped by four villains: Zeus(the dictator),Demeter(the over-controlling mother),Medusa(the snake-haired enchantress),and Apollo(the businessman),which further verifies that the creation of antagonists can be assisted by the framework of character archetypes. One character archetype through selection, collage, deformation, and extension, coupled with the creator’s personalized expression, can create numerous roles.Incorporating antagonists into the framework of the character archetypes is very helpful in creating more discriminating and diversified antagonists. |
