A Multidimensional Investigation Of The Repeated Definition Of "left X Right Y (左 X 右 Y)"

As a spoken expression in modern Chinese,"left X right Y" is used to express the repeated presentation of a certain action or state.It is commonly used in daily conversation and has certain productivity.Further investigation shows that "left X right Y" not only expresses the meaning of "repeated",but also contains the extended meaning of "long time" and "multi-quantity",and highlights the speaker’s subjective emotion and evaluation,reflecting the speaker’s understanding of the situation.In view of the integrity and indeductibility of its meaning,this paper defines "left X right Y" as a construction.By referring to the theory of construction grammar,this paper makes a detailed analysis of its construction meaning,syntactic attribute and pragmatic function.On this basis,it attempts to construct the process of its construction,and explains and discusses the cognitive mechanism behind the construction according to the theory of cognitive linguistics.This paper consists of six chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,which mainly explains the reason for the topic selection and the significance of the research,summarizes the previous research results,determines the research entry point and focus,and introduces the main research theories and methods.The second chapter analyzes the semantic features of "left X right Y" constructional meaning and its assembly components.Firstly,construct meaning is divided into basic meaning(" emphasis on repeated action ")and extended meaning("subjective expression of action ").According to the repetition of action behavior,the basic meaning is subdivided into two categories: "repeated presentation of the same or similar behavior" and "repeated alternating presentation of different behavior".And according to the difference of action projection volume domain,the extended meaning is divided into three types: "highlighting the high-order characteristics of an action behavior in the space domain","highlighting the long-term persistence of an action behavior in the time domain" and "highlighting the extreme disorder and frequency of an action behavior or state".Based on the differences in the emphasis of the construction basic meaning and its extension meaning,we also analyzed the semantic characteristics of components "X" and "Y",the semantic relations between "X" and "Y",and the semantic constraints of "left" and "right" under different subconstructions.The third chapter investigates the syntactic position and syntactic function of the construction "left X right Y" on the basis of the previous chapter,and pays attention to the commonalities and differences in the position and function of the construction when expressing the basic meaning and extended meaning.It is found that it emphasizes the basic meaning at the end of the sentence and acts as the predicate.The extension of the meaning is mainly located in the sentence or the end of the sentence,as adverbial or predicate.This chapter also analyzes the syntactic expression and the co-occurrence of the related terms under different meanings of the construction.Chapter four analyzes the pragmatic functions of the construction "left X right Y",namely interpersonal functions and textual functions.In terms of interpersonal function,the construction mainly has the function of subjective description and subjective evaluation.In terms of the function of discourse,we mainly investigate the cohesive function and information structure of constructions.We find that,when the construction highlights the meaning of "high spatial characteristics of action behavior" and "long duration in time quantity","left X right Y" highlights its subjective evaluation function while describing the action quantity.When the construction highlights the state meaning of "extreme disorder of an action behavior or state",the construction of "left X right Y" highlights its subjective function of describing the action behavior or state.In Chapter 5,the structuralization process of "left X right Y" is investigated from the diachronic point of view,and the structuralization level of "left X right Y" is constructed and divided according to the degree of structuralization integration.At the same time,based on the cognitive linguistic theories of metaphor and metonymy,reanalysis and analogy,construction suppression and word suppression,the evolution and succession of construction "left X right Y" are explained to some extent.The sixth chapter is the conclusion,which sorts out and summarizes the analysis of this paper,and points out the problems and shortcomings of this paper.
