Tajikistan’s film industry has a rich history that dates back to the Soviet era when Tajik cinema was used to promote the ideals of socialism and highlight the achievements of the Soviet Union. However, after independence, the country’s film industry faced significant challenges due to the collapse of the Soviet film distribution system, which resulted in a sharp decline in production and distribution.Despite these challenges,Tajik filmmakers continue to produce films that showcase the country’s unique cultural identity and address relevant social issues, such as poverty, corruption, and gender inequality. For instance, the film "True Noon" by Tajik director Nosir Saidov addresses the issue of gender-based violence in Tajikistan, which is a critical issue in the country.Another challenge facing the Tajik film industry is the lack of modern equipment and technology, which limits the quality of film production.Additionally, there is limited access to international markets, which limits the distribution and exposure of Tajik films outside the country. However, there are opportunities for the development of the Tajik film industry, such as the potential for co-productions with other countries, which can provide access to modern equipment, funding, and wider distribution channels. Moreover, there is a growing interest in Tajik culture and history, which can help increase the demand for Tajik films both domestically and internationally. The first part of the thesis consists of the formation conditions and the Tajik cinema’s main stages during the Soviet(USSR)period. It provides an overall view of the history and development of Tajik cinematography during the XX century. It also defines the development of cinematography in sovereign Tajikistan, explains the condition of Tajik cinema back in the1990 s,and analyzes the trends and directions of cinema development in Tajikistan. It also provides an overview of the influence of documentary aesthetics in the country during the civil war.The second part of the thesis defines the role of the main state film institution and film studios in the development of cinematography and explains other private film studios that are in the country. The third part summarizes the interaction work between Tajikistan and other countries’ film studios and producers. In conclusion, this study highlights the challenges and opportunities facing the film industry in Tajikistan after independence. To further develop and promote Tajik cinema both domestically and internationally, the government needs to provide increased support and investment in the film industry. This includes providing funding for the production and distribution of films, modern equipment, and technology, and promoting Tajik cinema through film festivals and other cultural events.
