Opera coach is a new discipline in China.Before formal opera rehearsals,opera coaches need to go through a series of complex and tedious preparations to provide singers with the closest possible experience to the orchestral sound during the rehearsal.Such preparations include how to carry out the desk work,how to select a piano-compressed score that most approximates the orchestral sound,and how to reproduce the sound effects of the full score as much as possible.All such issues should be paid serious attention to and put study on.During the process of rehearsal and other occasions,opera coaches must learn how to read the full score and understand the orchestral effects of the full score.They must quickly determine which notes in the piano-compressed vocal score correspond to the according instruments in the full score,as well as the texture and importance of each passage in the music.If they focus on playing certain seemingly difficult decorative parts in the vocal score without understanding the overall orchestral effect,they may neglect the main parts and the final performance may be far from the overall musical effect required by the opera score.This article compares the full score of an opera with the corresponding vocal score,and also compares its different versions.
