| This thesis uses three analytical methods proposed by three foreign music scholars for the chamber music work Le Marteau sans ma(?)tre(1953-1955)by the French twentieth-century composer Pierre Boulez(1925-2016)— "Pitch-class set multiplication","Pitch-Duration Association" and "Dynamic and Attack Associations".Through this analysis and interpretation,I will analyze and interpret the theoretical basis of these three analytical methods, the conceptual innovations brought about, and the difficult breakthroughs achieved.Through this analysis and interpretation, the author achieves the ultimate goal of accumulating analytical experience, exercising analytical ability, and enhancing analytical and innovative thinking through the analysis of analytical methods. The three musicologists who have proposed these analyses are Heinemann,Winick and Wenzel, all of whom are big fans of Pierre Boulez’s music and all of whom specialize in Boulez’s Le Marteau sans ma(?)tre.Their analytical approaches to the work are unique, carefully observed, and illuminating, and as such have become key documents in the study of Boulez’s work.(It is important to note that all three of them have an important premise or foundation for their research, and that is,Koblyakov’s pioneering doctoral dissertation on Boulez’s Le Marteau sans ma(?)tre,Pierre Boulez A world of harmony.)Of course, the interest in the three scholars’ work is due to Boulez’s prominence as a composer and to the artistic achievement of The Masterless Mallet.Based on the lyrics of three short poems from the famous French surrealist poet Rene Char(1907-1988),this chamber work uses mezzo-soprano and an innovative arrangement of six instruments and percussion as its medium, demonstrating a pioneering sense of advancement in creative conception, sophistication in writing technique, and Westernization in musical expression, and representing It represents the culmination of a period of research and experimentation by Boulez. The complexity of the compositional technique of Le Marteau sans ma(?)tre directly leads to a high degree of methodological complexity in its analysis. While this thesis focuses its research on these three methods of analysis,it does not detract from the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of the work. For any analysis that does not have as its purpose the promotion of people’s interpretation of the work is meaningless to its study. This thesis is framed by the introductory section, chapters 1 to 4,and concluding remarks. The introductory section consists of four levels: the origin and significance of the study,an overview of the current status of the study, the research ideas and methods, and an overview of Boulez and his creations. The first chapter starts from the situation of Le Marteau sans ma(?)tre as one of the works of Boulez’s "Char Series",and then explains the basis of the sequence of the three analytical methods of Le Marteau sans ma(?)tre.Chapters 2 to 4 discuss these analyses and related issues under the name of each of the three analyses. The concluding section further reflects on the questions raised and answered by the author throughout this study, following the study of the study and the analysis of the analysis of Boulez’s masterpiece,Le Marteau sans ma(?)tre. |
