As a historian and art historian with great influence in the 20th century,Francis Haskell(1928-2000)has made remarkable achievements in the fields of art and society as well as art and history.During Haskell’s extensive academic career,he has successively published seven books with the value of changing the direction of the development of art history,such as Sponsors and Painters,Rediscoveries in Art,History and Its Images.Art sponsorship,art interest,art collection and exhibition,image and history constitute the main fields of Haskell’s art and history research.At present,The few studies on Haskell in China can be roughly divided into four aspects: the study of historical thoughts,the study of sponsors,the study of interesting history and the study of exhibition history.The attention to the issue of the use of image as historical evidence of Haskell is relatively weak.In the field of historical research,the study of the use of image as historical evidence of Haskell represents a new trend of Haskell’s research.The study of Haskell in combination with History and Its Images will not only help us better grasp its understanding of the issue of the use of image as historical evidence,but also provide enlightenment and reference for the construction of the subject of image history in China.This topic is based on the existing research results of predecessors.Through the comprehensive use of text reading method,comparative analysis method,and the dialectical thinking method of integrating logic and history,the in-depth understanding of History and its Images is carried out,so as to achieve the purpose of comprehensive and systematic understanding of Haskell’s understanding of the use of image as historical evidence.The thesis is mainly divided into five parts:The introduction part first introduces the current academic community’s basic understanding of the relationship between image and history and Haskell,and on this basis makes a preliminary estimate of the significance of studying Haskell’s History and Image,and then systematically combs the relevant research status of Haskell at home and abroad around this topic,and finally explains the research ideas and methods of this topic.Chapter Ⅰ mainly discusses History and Its Images in detail through two main lines of research: first,it starts from the historical concepts of scholars with different identities;The second is to deeply explore the specific understanding and research path of different scholars in history about the use of image as historical evidence.Chapter Ⅱ mainly traces back to the origin of the use of image as historical evidence and judges its value through two questions throughout History and Image: first,the specific practical problem of the use of image as historical evidence,that is,how is the use of image as historical evidence possible(why can image be used as historical evidence and how to use image evidence?),And the existence of misunderstandings(the implicit deception of the image itself,the multiple interpretation of the image meaning,the absence of the ability to read and interpret the image,the solidified cognition of the known experience,and the strong interpretability of the text material);second,the problem of historical cognition of the use of image as historical evidence,that is,how to understand the use of image as historical evidence.Chapter Ⅲ mainly by comparing the book of History and Image and Eyewitnessing: The Use of Images as Historical Evidence,and then carries out a deeper investigation of Haskell and Peter Burke’s understanding of the use of image as historical evidence: On the one hand,both of the dimension of attention to the problem and the way of understanding the problem showed that Haskell tended to regard the use of image as historical evidence as a historical study which centered on artistic interpretation,while Peter Burke regarded the use of image as historical evidence as a research method to promote the continuous development of the new cultural history;Secondly,based on the difference of their research consciousness,two development paths of the history of image evidence are extended.The conclusion part attempts to On the basis of evaluating the theoretical contributions and shortcomings of Haskell’s research on the use of image as historical evidence,to explore Haskell’s influence on the development of Chinese image historiography.In general,the core value of Haskell’s research on the use of image as historical evidence is to regard the history of image evidence as an independent and self-contained historical discipline,which provides theoretical reference for the construction of Chinese image history. |
