A Study On The Riegl’s Theory Of Style

Through the study of the western ancient decorative art style,the Stifragen:Grundlegungen zu einer Geschichte der Ornamenti written by Alois Riegl refuted the unreasonable idea of artistic materialism in the same period and tried to analyze the inner driving force of artistic style,thus establishing the linear history of decorative art as a clue.Due to the late entry of Riegl’s related theories into domestic academic circles,most scholars interpret Riegl’s theoretical thoughts with highly generalized research methods,resulting in the incomplete interpretation of the connotation of Riegl’s art style theory.This paper attempts from the problem of style of research contents,research methods,objective orientation,and theoretical influence to analyze argument logic and methods in the Stifragen,appeared and development of the theory of style to parse out the overall direction of the theory.In the end,the comprehensive interpretation of Stifragen,in order to provide the western theory of style in the early 20 th century emerging research point of view,consummates Chinese art academia to show the Stifragen in the research and application value,promote the western art theory system construction.
