A Study On The Image Of Mothering In Chinese Movies In The New Century

In recent years,Chinese family ethics films have emerged one after another and become popular shooting themes.The family is the initial cradle of individual socialization and the basic unit of society.The gender division of labor and values within the family are a microcosm of society.Mothers are the earliest and most influential individuals to come into contact with,and the image of mothering portrayed in movies reflects society’s expectations for mothering,which is a transmission of social ideology.This study selected over 50 influential and representative family ethics films from China over the past 22 years since the new century as the research subjects for text analysis.From the perspective of educational sociology,the analysis of the image of a mother in a movie aims to explore the generation mechanism of the image of a mother and its symbolic value to society.Using methods such as literature research,physical analysis,and content analysis,starting from the environmental symbols of movies,and based on the theory of gender division of labor and intergenerational transmission,this paper categorizes and analyzes the image of mothering.It is believed that mothering images not only meet social expectations but also resist social gaze;The social and cultural environment and intergenerational transmission of mothering are the main reasons for the emergence of mothering images;The maternal images created by filmmakers will also awaken audience awareness and promote social reflection and development.The discussion of this study mainly focuses on the following aspects:Firstly,analyze the environmental symbols of the maternal image in family ethics movies and divide them into two parts for discussion,namely clothing symbols and family space.Research has found that the clothing symbols in family ethics movies are a combination of aesthetics and social expectations in clothing design concepts,showcasing the characteristics of characters through clothing styles,materials,and colors;The division of labor and education in family space has distinct gender characteristics,which are the fundamental conditions for shaping the connotation and scope of mothering.Secondly,categorize and analyze the image of mothering in family ethics movies.Starting from the two important mothering roles of education and care,the image of mothering can be divided into sacrificial and dedicated images that monopolize education and care functions,busy images that balance education and self-development,blaming images that abandon education and care functions,others who participate in care,and mothering that controls education,and provide examples for analysis,We delved into the various forms of "mother job anxiety" and "mother job dilemma" in different mother job images.Thirdly,analyzing the mechanism of the image of mothering in family ethics movies,it is believed that it includes two parts: social environment and intergenerational transmission of mothering.Social expectations and order have created the image of mothering,including traditional disciplinary behavior in education,shaping of scientific parenting concepts,dual role oppression,and intergenerational transmission of mothering image.The educational tradition and scientific parenting are social expectations for mothering,and the dual roles are divided into two parts: daughter role and mother role,professional role and mother role,which are women’s self-adaptation and regulation after becoming mothers.Regarding the intergenerational transmission of mothering,research has found that inherited mothering often comes from harmonious family relationships between mother and daughter,while rebellious mothering intergenerational transmission is often a "rebellious" inheritance of mothering,which is women’s resistance to social injustice expectations.Fourthly,from the perspective of educational sociology,an in-depth analysis is conducted on the educational implications of the maternal image symbols in family ethics movies.It is believed that the concept of mothering among filmmakers is influenced by mothering images in society,and its inspiration can be divided into two directions: "breaking down mothering barriers,diversifying and integrating development" and "relieving mothering anxiety,promoting a virtuous cycle of mothering".The image of mothering promotes the diversified development of mothering through the "convergence" and "differentiation" of female audiences.The audience’ reflection on the imbalance of gender division of labor in family education and the reflection on intensive mothering can be alleviated through "maternal anxiety".
