The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 Edition)put forward requirements on students’ ability to use language knowledge and skills in an integrated way.In 2017,English summary writing was included in the Shanghai College Entrance Examination.The teaching of English summary writing is helpful to improve students’ reading and writing ability.However,there are still some problems in the teaching of English summary writing in senior high schools.Therefore,it is necessary to conduct a study on the current situation of the teaching of summary writing in high schools,so as to provide effective suggestions for teachers.Based on the theory of "Input Hypothesis","Output Hypothesis" and "Constructivism",this study adopts questionnaire,interview and text analysis as the research methods.296 English teachers participated in the questionnaire survey,among whom 6 of them were interviewed afterwards.Text analysis was carried out for 120 students’ summary writing texts.The current study attempts to answer the following four research questions:1.What are high school English teachers’ cognition and attitude towards summary writing?2.What is the current situation of summary writing teaching in senior high schools?3.What is the effect of summary writing teaching in senior high schools?4.What difficulties do senior high school English teachers have in summary writing teaching?The findings are as follows: High school English teachers have a great understanding of and positive attitude towards summary writing.Teachers do well in setting the teaching objectives of summary writing but have not paid enough attention to the teaching of structure and language of summary writing.The teaching of summary writing strategies is generally satisfactory but not balanced among different strategies.Teachers performed quite poorly in the feedback of summary writing and lacks variety in the ways of feedback.As for the effects of teaching,the content and writing conventions of students’ summary writing texts are great,while the language and structure of that are not satisfactory.Teachers have some difficulties in teaching the content,structure and language of summary writing.There are significant differences in the current teaching situation of summary writing among teachers of different ages,teaching years,professional titles and school levels.Based on the findings,the author puts forward some suggestions to improve the current situation.
