Richard Serra is one of the most influential modern sculptors from the end of the20 th century. His later sculptures are mainly made of large steel structures in specific locations, and he uses "Field specificity" to explain his works. In art, understanding the concept of field needs to take into account the interaction among works, audience, environment and context.Through the construction of field, artists can create specific field experience."Field Specific" is closely related to the emergence of "Earth art",emphasizing that a work is created for a specific environment and therefore inseparable from the overall environment.Richard Serra takes inspiration from Ladies in Palaces and Japanese garden architecture, and goes out into public spaces to create large steel sculptures that make the viewer the subject of his work.Starting from the specificity of field, comparing his large-scale sculptures and earth art in specific places,we can find that they have different field concepts. In terms of urban engineering,Serra’s works often use architectural structure language, but in terms of space definition,it is different from architecture, reflecting the characteristics of non-systematic architecture.Serra is one of the representatives of post-minimalist sculptors. His public space works focus on time and space. When the audience walks in the works, the curved "iron wall" will give the audience different feelings at every moment, making the static sculpture space have a dynamic experience. The phenomenological concept can also explain Serra’s concept of field. He connects sculpture with physicality.Sculpture creates forms through the sculptor’s body and is perceived through the audience’s body.To create a field,it is necessary to emphasize the particularity of the scene(world),design interactive ways and interactive elements suitable for the audience, and pay attention to the sense of scene and performance,so as to guide the audience to interact and reflect.
