Guzel Shamilevna Yashina’s 2015 novel,Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes,tells the story of Zuleikha,a Tatar village woman who struggles with fate and awakens her sense of self.This work was awarded several literary prizes,such as the Russian Best Novel Award,the Yasnaya Polyana Prize,and the Big Book Award.This article seeks to analyze the characterization of Zuleikha in light of Virginia Woolf’s theory of intersexuality.Woolf’s theory centers on the idea that individuals possess two minds,one male and one female,and that it is only when these two minds are merged into one that the mind can become truly fertile.This essay seeks to analyze how Zuleikha is characterized in light of Woolf’s theory.It examines how Zuleikha is characterized before and after she is exiled from her village,and how she transforms from a meek,hard-working woman who is oppressed by traditional constraints to a woman who is capable of controlling her destiny and influencing those around her.The article looks at how Zuleikha’s character is shaped by her experiences.It examines how she is able to hunt,study medicine,and support herself and her son in the difficult conditions of a labor camp.It also looks at how she is able to maintain both a masculine and a gentle side to her personality.It is concluded that Zuleikha is able to achieve a sense of inner sexual harmony,is full of hope for the future,and is able to change her life and influence those around her.This article seeks to shed new light on Zuleikha’s characterization by analyzing it through the lens of Woolf’s theory of intersexuality.It highlights how Zuleikha is able to take control of her own destiny and,in doing so,is able to influence those around her and impact the lives of those in the labor camp.It emphasizes the importance of Zuleikha’s character in the larger narrative of national history and illustrates how her story is an inspiring example of the power of the individual to overcome difficult circumstances.It further demonstrates the significance of Woolf’s theory of intersexuality in understanding the complexity of the human condition. |
