| College English is a compulsory course with high credits for non-English majors,which covers almost all college students.However,for a long time,the teaching content of college English has been dominated by western culture,and Chinese culture has taken little or no proportion in the teaching materials.As a result,students only passively receive foreign culture in intercultural communication,and their ability to express Chinese culture in intercultural communication is weak and this phenomenon is called “aphasia of Chinese culture”.Previous studies focus on analyzing the current situation and causes of “aphasia of Chinese culture” in college English,and many scholars also put forward solutions to this phenomenon,but there are few studies on teachers’ taking specific measures to integrate Chinese culture into college English classes and evaluate its efficiency.This study takes freshmen in a certain university as research objects and the participants are from 10 classes,randomly divided into two groups,and five classes in each group.The number of students in the experimental group is 178 in total,while the number of students in the control group is 175.Teachers in the experimental group will deliberately integrate knowledge of Chinese culture into the teaching of college English while teachers in the control group still concentrate on imparting knowledge of English language skills and culture.The research takes the methods of test,observation,and interview,aiming to investigate students’ knowledge of English expressions of Chinese culture,whether students’ understanding of Chinese culture(excellent traditional Chinese culture and core socialist values)is deepened,and whether their English expression ability of Chinese culture is improved after a semester of study.The test results show that students’ English expression ability of Chinese culture is weak,and the experimental group has some improvement in the English expressions of core socialist values,but there is no significant improvement in their English expressions of excellent traditional Chinese culture.The interview results show that students have a relatively shallow understanding of Chinese culture,and they have little knowledge of English expressions of excellent traditional Chinese culture and core socialist values.The teachers’ supplement of English expressions of Chinese culture in college English course will help broaden their horizons,establish correct values,and enhance their cultural confidence.After a semester’s study,students’ understanding of Chinese culture has been deepened to some extent,but the effect is not obvious.In general,in the teaching of Chinese culture,the teaching efficiency of core socialist values is more obvious,while the teaching efficiency of excellent traditional Chinese culture is not so obvious.Therefore,college English teachers should adopt teaching strategies like choosing easy and clear teaching materials and promoting students’ subjectivity in class to improve students’ understanding and English expression ability of excellent traditional Chinese culture in the future. |
